Our expert insight on the 2nd arrondissement of Paris

    • The borough is divided in two, with the west boasting historic heritage, quality buildings and peace and quiet.
    • In the east, the buildings are less robust, but the vibrant neighborhood atmosphere around Montorgueil and its food shops is highly appealing.
    • The lack of green spaces in this arrondissement is compensated for by the proximity of the parks and gardens of the nearby 1st arrondissement.
    • Prices are relatively affordable for living in the very center of Paris.

    Icône information générale

Essential information to know before buying in the 2nd arrondissements

Stretching from Opéra Garnier to the Halles arrondissement, the 2nd arrondissement is the smallest in Paris by surface area. It is well-served by many bus routes, metro line 3 to the south, and lines 8 and 9 to the north along the Grand Boulevards. In this area, it’s best to use public transport rather than driving, just like in other central arrondissements such as Paris 1, Paris 3 and Paris 4.

The 2nd arrondissement is rich in history and culture, featuring numerous covered passageways (see below) and a variety of theaters. However, there is limited green space. For that, you’ll need to head further south into the 1st arrondissement.

What are the different neighborhoods in Paris 2 ?

    • Gaillon
Located in the west of the arrondissement, this area south of the Opéra Garnier is home to the famous Rue de la Paix and its many luxury boutiques. It is also home to a number of renowned theaters. Its low population density is a reminder of its commercial vocation.
    • Vivienne
Home to the famous Galerie Vivienne, this is the quiet, middle-class arrondissement of the arrondissement, again with a fairly low residential density and some fine Haussmann-style buildings.
    • Mail
Centered around the famous ‘Sentier’, this is an emblematic arrondissement of Paris. The streets are narrow and the buildings are not always of high quality. The replacement of textile shops by convenience stores is driving up prices in this area.
    • Bonne-Nouvelle
This arrondissement is made up of the highly sought-after rue Montorgueuil and rue Saint-Denis, which has nevertheless changed a great deal in recent years. With its village feel and numerous food shops, this area is favored for its typically Parisian atmosphere.

      A brief History

An integral part of the Charles V wall (14th century), housing really took off in the 17th century. The rue Saint-Denis axis was adorned with a large number of religious establishments, including the Eglise Saint-Sauveur, which have since been destroyed. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Bourse arrondissement attracted the world of finance, and the boulevards became a “trendy” area. This gave rise to a new type of urban planning: covered passages. The arrondissement is home to more than half of Parisian’s passages, most of which are located along the Grand Boulevards.
